Memorial Day, A Day of Remembrance

With the last Monday of May coming up we approach upon Memorial Day. Memorial Day was wonderfully Instituted to lay the foundation of support for the servicemen we've lost. It's important to remember those we have lost so that we never forget their service and their sacrifice.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day goes back quite a bit further than most people realize. Memorial Day wasn't originally Memorial Day, it was actually named Decoration Day. Born from the ash of the Civil War, Decoration Day was officially proclaimed on May 30th by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, on May 5th, 1868. Congress would go on to pass the National Holiday Act of 1971. changing the title of Decoration Day to Memorial Day. This also officiated the recognition of Memorial Day as a national holiday. As well as declaring that Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May.

What's the Point of Celebrating Memorial Day?

The point is, it's imperative that we celebrate Memorial Day, we cannot forget the servicemen that have served our nation. Enlisting in the military is no small change of lifestyle. It is an enormous commitment; it takes you away from almost everyone you know and subjects you to months of training. After you finish your training, you will usually be working away from home, away from family and friends, whether it be overseas or in the States. These are the things that lots of people would sum up as, well... just about everything to them. These people are giving up everything that matters to them to serve us and keep us safe.

Internal Conflict

There is a sacrifice these brave heroes make as well, their mental health. It's terrible to think about, honestly its terrible to write about, but it's not something that can go unsaid. In 2020, there were 6,146 recorded Veteran suicide deaths. Even after our soldiers make it home many must now fight their hardest battle yet, and that is the internal psychological conflict that plagues our veterans.

Hearing that any hero has lost his life is tear-jerking, but 6,146 in one year is absolutely unacceptable. It is appalling, and even sickening to hear about such a statistic. This statistic alone lights a fire of support in the hearts of many Americans, including us. This Metaphorical fire doesn't need to be extinguished either, this is a fire that needs to spread, and that is our goal. Being we are the people they sacrificed for; we must not forget to support, cherish, and celebrate our veterans.

Our Message

We at Bio-One NW Indianapolis support our veterans in any way we can, as well as remember the brave servicemen we have lost. We understand the sacrifices they have made for us and appreciate everything they have done. Without our servicemen and their sacrifice, the world wouldn't function as it does. Thanks to these people, we can live peacefully.

Thank you to all of our servicemen, whether you are here with us now or have sadly moved on, we appreciate and value you. Your service, as well as yourself. You haven't been forgotten; you won't be forgotten. Thank you.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to us at any time. We are always here to help.

Maintaining a clean and sanitary environment is crucial for our overall health and well-being. One often overlooked aspect of hygiene is the proper disinfection of rodent droppings. While rodents may seem harmless, their droppings can pose serious health risks. This blog will explore the importance of rodent droppings disinfection and understand why it is essential for safeguarding public health. Bio-One NW Indianapolis specializes in Rodent Disinfection for residential and commercial properties to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Health Risks Associated with Rodent Droppings

Rodents, such as mice and rats, are known carriers of various diseases and pathogens. Their droppings can harbor harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can contaminate surfaces, food, and air, leading to the transmission of diseases to humans. Disinfection of rodent droppings is especially important to certain people at risk. These groups include people who are pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, and infants and toddlers. Some of the health risks that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) mentions, associated with rodent droppings include:

  1. Hantavirus: Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is a severe respiratory illness transmitted through contact with infected rodent droppings. Inhaling dust contaminated with Hantavirus can lead to flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, can be fatal.
  2. Salmonellosis: Rodent droppings can be a source of Salmonella bacteria, causing gastrointestinal illness. Ingesting food or water contaminated with rodent feces can result in symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever.
  3. Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with urine from infected rodents. It can lead to fever, headache, muscle aches, and, in severe cases, liver or kidney damage.
  4. Plague: Though rare, rodent droppings can carry Yersinia pestis, the bacteria responsible for the bubonic plague. Fleas that infest rodents can transmit the disease to humans, causing severe illness if left untreated.

Importance of Rodent Droppings Disinfection

  1. Prevention of Disease Transmission: Properly disinfecting rodent droppings can help eliminate or reduce the risk of disease transmission. By removing the bacteria, viruses, and parasites present in the droppings, we can effectively protect ourselves and our communities from potential health hazards.
  2. Mitigating Allergens: Rodent droppings can trigger allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. The proteins present in the droppings can cause respiratory distress, especially in those with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. Disinfecting the area helps remove these allergens and promotes a healthier living environment.
  3. Eliminating Attractants: Rodent droppings are a clear sign of infestation. By promptly disinfecting the affected area, we can remove the scent and pheromones left behind, reducing the likelihood of attracting more rodents. This proactive approach helps in preventing further infestations and keeps our surroundings rodent-free.
  4. Restoring Peace of Mind: Living or working in an environment contaminated with rodent droppings can be distressing and mentally taxing. Proper disinfection removes the physical remnants and restores a sense of cleanliness and peace of mind.

Best Practices for Rodent Droppings Disinfection

When dealing with rodent droppings, it is essential to follow proper guidelines to ensure effective disinfection:

  1. Safety First: Wear protective gloves, a mask, and goggles to avoid direct contact with the droppings and prevent inhalation of airborne particles.
  2. Cleaning: Begin by carefully removing any visible droppings using disposable paper towels or a damp cloth. Double-bag the waste in plastic bags for disposal.
  3. Disinfection: Use a recommended disinfectant that is effective against a wide range of pathogens. Thoroughly clean the affected area, including surfaces, floors, and objects, following the instructions provided by the disinfectant manufacturer.
  4. Ventilation: During and after disinfection, ensure proper ventilation by opening windows or using fans to allow fresh air to circulate and remove any residual odors or disinfectant fumes.
  5. Preventive Measures: Identify and address any potential entry points or conditions that may attract rodents to prevent future infestations. Seal cracks, store food properly, and maintain cleanliness in and around your living or working spaces.

Rodent Urine is also dangerous

Rodent urine can also pose significant health risks and should be treated with caution. When rodents, such as rats or mice, urinate, they can contaminate surfaces and objects with bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens present in their urine. Rodent urine is more dangerous than droppings due to it being harder to detect whether it's on the wall, floor, or on objects. Regular cleaning and disinfection, along with proper rodent control measures, are essential for maintaining a healthy and safe environment.

Disinfecting rodent droppings is not just about cleanliness; it is a critical step in protecting ourselves and our communities from potential health risks. By promptly addressing rodent infestations and following proper disinfection protocols, we can mitigate the spread of diseases and ensure a safer, healthier environment for everyone. Let Bio-One NW Indianapolis prioritize rodent droppings disinfection for you to keep you and your loved ones safe.

As we come upon the annual third Saturday of May, we also approach National Armed Forces Day. It's of the utmost importance that we pay our respects to the brave people serving in the military for our country. Every day they work to keep our nation a safer and better place, and at times, sacrifice everything they have to make the world a better place.

History

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy established National Armed Forces Day and with good reason. It is very important that we celebrate and continue to show our love and support for our military. Not everyone in the military does the same thing, some see combat every day, some don't see it all, some go overseas, and some remain in the States. Regardless of role, what every serviceman has in common is that they are all heroes.

National Armed Forces Day is important for not only showing our support for our troops. It is also imperative to educate yourself on the impact that the military has on society, as well as the impact that service can have on them. Due to the sacrifices our soldiers make every day we can sleep peacefully at night. Their fight doesn't stop once they come home either, many veterans come back home with PTSD.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition triggered by a traumatic event. PTSD can get substantially better over time, but there is no cure for it. It is projected that 7 out of every 100 veterans will have PTSD, that is 7% of all veterans. This is why it is crucial to show our love and support for our troops. They fight for us away from home, to keep our homes safe, we must help them with their mental battles when they come back.

How can you support the Military?

Expressing gratitude and offering support to the armed forces is not limited to a single day. However, National Armed Forces Day serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by service members. There are numerous ways individuals can show their appreciation:

a. Thank a Service Member: Expressing gratitude to service members in person or through written notes and messages can make a significant impact. It shows that their service is valued and acknowledged.

b. Engage in Volunteer Work: Participate in volunteer programs or initiatives that directly support military personnel, veterans, or their families. This could involve mentoring programs, care packages, or offering assistance in job placement.

c. Advocate for Policies: Support policies that promote the well-being, mental health, and fair treatment of military personnel and veterans. Raise awareness about the challenges they face and encourage others to do the same.

Help Us Honor Law Enforcement Heroes Who Sacrificed and Continue to Serve

As we continue to move through the month of May, we have come upon National Police Week. as well as the upcoming National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This is the week of May when we honor the brave Heros that are our police officers serving and risking their safety for ours every day.

History

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This is the day that we honor all of our peace officers who have lost their lives. Its always tragic when officers pass attempting to protect not only you but your fellow man as well. Since then, the week that includes May 15th has been designated as National Police Week, and it has grown to become a significant event in the law enforcement community.

Why National Police Week is Important?

One of the most important aspects of National Police Week is the opportunity it provides for us to honor the men and women who serve in law enforcement. Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, and National Police Week is a chance for us to show them our appreciation. It is a time to recognize the sacrifices that these brave individuals make and to thank them for their service.

It is imperative for us to remember the officers who sadly lost their lives in the line of duty. For a large part of the nation, blue and gold are a sign of Justice. It instills a feeling of safety and peace in the people of the United States. Sadly, this is not how everyone thinks of it. For some, it even paints a target on the backs of officers sworn to protect them.

In addition to honoring those who serve and those who have lost their lives. National Police Week also serves as an opportunity for law enforcement agencies to come together and collaborate. During this week, law enforcement agencies from around the country participate in a variety of events. Such as the National Police Memorial Service, which brings together thousands of officers and their families to honor fallen officers.

National Police Week is also a time for us to reflect on the role of law enforcement in our society. The police force plays a vital role in maintaining law and order. Their work is absolutely essential for the safety and security of our communities. However, the role of law enforcement is not without its challenges and controversies. National Police Week provides an opportunity for us to have important conversations about the issues facing law enforcement and to work toward solutions.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of mental health and well-being. Psychological health is a vital part of the overall strength of someone, though it is often overlooked and stigmatized in our society. Mental Health Awareness Month aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide support for those who may be struggling with psychological issues. We, at Bio-One NW Indianapolis, believe in the motto: "Help First, Business Second". We change clients' lives every day. What may seem like an average job for us, is a huge step for a client to take no matter the situation. Our quick response and quick project completion turnover are life-changing; sometimes as little as a week!

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five adults in the United States experience psychological illness in a given year. Mental illness can take many forms, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among others. It can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

What can you do?

Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about the illness, and to take action to support those who may be struggling. Here are some ways that you can get involved:

  1. Educate yourself: Learn more about mental health and the different types of illness. Read books, articles, and online resources to expand your knowledge and understanding.
  2. Raise awareness: Use social media to share information and resources about mental health. Encourage friends and family to talk openly about their own experiences with mental illness.
  3. Support those who are struggling: If someone you know is struggling with issues, offer your support and understanding. Listen without judgment and encourage them to seek professional help if needed.
  4. Take care of your own mental health: Self-care is essential for maintaining good well-being. Additionally, make time for activities that you enjoy, get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and practice stress-reducing activities such as meditation or yoga.
  5. Advocate for better mental health services: Services are often underfunded and understaffed. Advocate for better access to specific services in your community and support organizations that provide those services.
  6. Volunteer for local psychological health organizations
